Solstice and Strawberries

Summer Solstice 2010 found us downtown watching Capri's kickball game.
David checked in so Capri would know her biggest fan was present.
We cheered extra loud after she caught a fly ball in center field!
Then he helped himself to the strawberries:
We brought a whole picnic, and strawberries were supposed to be our dessert.
He wasn't interested in anything else--not even the cheese slices on his sandwich could deter him.
David found his love and loved what he found.
As we packed up, Sam and I teased each other about eating all the strawberries without leaving any for the other. That's when we realized that David polished off the entire 1-lb container by himself.
Notice his method in the above picture--he took a bite out of each one.
It's like licking the cupcake so no one else wants it.
Mmmm. Dirt and berries. That was a fun picnic.

Lessons on Watering the Garden

You have to water it low:
And water it high:
Then water it high and low (All the while, Mom was wondering how much of a drink the 2" seedlings need today.):
Just in case it waters you, there's only one thing to do:
Drop it and RUN!
Then come right back and show it who's boss.
In David's defense, I'll admit that groundwater in our town is c-c-c-old.
Cold enough to turn our kitchen faucet frosty every time we turn it on.

Bathbath Splash

We were filling the tub for David's bath, I turned around to get a new towel, and I heard a splash.
I think David was as suprised as I was that he could get himself into the tub.
I'm not sure that he knows how to repeat it, but this once made him happy.

Bathbath is definitely his favorite time of day. Right up there with eating cheese and strawberries, or going outside, or being chased around the room.

Garden Hope

Can you see the strawberry blossoms? They look very promising--like maybe we'll have a bumper crop this year. The zucchini plant in the first pot is from the store. The following three pots hold zucchini plants I started from seed this year. We didn't have as much luck this year with our own starts--so for consolation I went to pick up some blossoming plants. They quickly imroved the look of our garden! Usually I plant the peas as early as the ground thaws, but I was behind the curve this year so they are just beginning to sprout. Hopefully we'll have a successful crop of beets, carrots, peas, brussel sprouts, brocoli, and cucumbers.

The Fan

Daddy has been busy doing some improvements over the last several months to increase the energy efficiency of our home. He recently finished up the crawl space and moved into the attic, where one of the tasks at hand was to replace our bathroom ventilation fan.

David happened upon the work project, and he was completely taken with the ladder, the tools, the parts spread all around . . .he just couldn't get enough of it. When he looked up at the ceiling and saw his Daddy's face looking back at him through the vacant fan location, he was especially impressed. He cheered him on with a rousing round of applause.

Any chance he gets, David likes to rush into the bathroom, look up to inspect the fan (or "aaa" as he calls it) and point up, all the while chanting "Daddy" over and over and over again. David definitely approves of his daddy's handyman skills.

Daddy upgraded our fan and made a fan out of David while he was at it.

Happy Birthday, Sam

We started this month with a 30-year birthday celebration for Sam. He was an easy birthday boy to please--blueberry muffins in the morning and Filipino food for dinner that night.

The real treat was after dinner, at the park. He got to show David the ropes to flying his new kite.

Every Last Drop

One of the "differences" Sam and I discovered after we were married was really quite trivial--he likes to drink his milk after a bowl of cereal; I don't. I really don't care for the warm milk with floaties in it that tends to dribble down my chin.

Apparently the men in my life feel differently about the last few swallows that come straight from the bowl.
