We grabbed a friend and headed back up to the U-pick farm this summer.
Of course this little guy loved the wide open spaces to run around.
David helped find the cauliflower and dig up some potatoes. He was happy to help carry the bags back to the wagon, too.
I thought this guy was a hoot! An Alaskan version of a scarecrow is a stuffed wolf.
Apparently he's deterred a few moose from munching on the greens, but not quite all of them.
Can you see his permagrin? A little eery to look at closely, but I got a good laugh out of this!
Here we are together with the wagon that helped haul around our produce and boys.
David walked through the fields a lot more than he rode in the wagon this year. His brown puddle splashers were a life saver in those muddy fields! We were happy to have this outing on a truly sunny day in August.
We found a u-pick raspberry farm on our way back from Pyrah's u-pick farm and stopped to get some plump berries. The rows were so long and the patch was so big that David ran ahead of me in the rows, and it took 10 minutes for me to find him again. At first it was a game of chase through the bushes, as he would run ahead to the next bush for a hiding spot. Before long, I started getting worried. It was scary to not know where he was for that long! I kept asking other people (there were only a handful of people picking while we were there) and saying prayers to find him, and eventually I found him at the end of a row struggling to use a rake through the brush. I don't know where he picked up the rake, but he was playing with it like he didn't have a care in the world! Oh, what a tricky balance it is to give David a little more independence without creating a dangerous or scary situation for me. He loves a game of chase--and that's all it was to him. I learned from that experience that I have to trust that he'll come back when I call him before it can be a game.
Yesterday I was at the Farmer's Market, and the Emcee over the loud speaker thanked everyone for joining them on "this brisk fall day." It felt cool and damp, but I'm not willing to admit that the end of August is fall time. I consider it to be the end of the summer!
