We celebrated the Fourth of July by spending the day in Amish Country. Sam stayed home to catch up with another friend, but the rest of us had a great time celebrating our first freedom--the freedom to worship as we please. Amish country hosts all kinds of fun little shops--we were after baking supplies, bulk spices, and cheese--and we were not disappointed. Oh, and fry pies. Little individual pies, but freshly homemade by the Amish folks.
We stopped at the Amish Auction, where Nana helped David and Evelyn hold baby chicks.
And Pappy helped David have a good look at the farm animals.
That evening, we had fun watching the kids throw poppers with Uncle Sam and Uncle Andrew.

It was so nice to see fireworks--it's not something we get to see in the Alaska summer, owing to the lack of darkness. So it was very important to us to introduce David to fireworks on Independence Day. While we waited for them to start David chased fireflies, threw rocks in the lake, we shared fresh blueberries by the handful, and enjoyed a wonderful summer evening together.
