This Little Boy

This little boy

Who prefers a shower over a bath then sings in the shower at the top of his lungs, "The farmer and the tail, the farmer and the tail . . ."

The one who gives us hugs and kisses with every parting and reuniting.

Who knows how to zip his own coat, recite our home phone number and can identify half of the alphabet, all before he turns 3.

Who made a trail of straight pins across the entire living room, then defended it by explaining that they were his "train tracks."

The one that can only stand 20 minutes of a movie, then be perfectly behaved for 70 minutes of a musical concert.

Who can go from fighting mad with a fiery temper to sweet and docile, even charming, just because a new face walked into the room.

The one who decided it wasn't enough to pour milk down our forced air vents--so he moved on to the entire jar of black pepper (which subsequently caused much sneezing, sniffling, burning and wheezing).

Who knows his feelings well enough to say I am happy, sad, excited, disappointed, peaceful, scared, sleepy or frustrated.

The one who thinks there are four food groups: cheese, cheese sticks, mac and cheese, and ice cream.

This little boy is the apple of our eye. The center of our world. The delight of our hearts.

At the end of the day, when we put him to bed, we love to look at that sleeping little face, and try to convince ourselves that it's really not as exhausting as we think to keep up with such a peaceful looking child.

Then we wake up the next morning, do it all again, and remember:
It really is that exhausting.

And it's really that wonderful, too.

We love you, David.
